———————————————————————-According to Politico, President-Elect Donald Trump will appoint Rex Tillerson, former CEO of ExxonMobil, as his Secretary of State. The appointment would end weeks of speculation about who would be Trump’s ambassador to the world. There has been no official confirmation from the campaign.
Tillerson has rumored ties to Russian president Vladamir Putin
Tillerson has rumored ties to Russian President Vladamir Putin, as in 2011, while CEO of ExxonMobil, he made a deal with the Russian government that allowed ExxonMobil to explore oil fields in Russia’s Arctic. In exchange, state-controlled oil company OAO Rosneft was allowed to acquire ownership stakes in Exxon projects in the United States. He later received the Order of Friendship award from Putin, which is one of Russia’s highest honors.
Long, public battle almost over
The search for a Secretary of State has been a very public process, with numerous candidates being the subject of speculation, most notably Mitt Romney, who at one time was considered to be the favorite to get the post.
That line of thinking was diminished when Trump senior adviser Kellyanne Conway and Newt Gingrich both criticized Romney in television interviews. Another candidate who had been speculated about was former New York City mayor Rudy Giuliani, who took himself out of the running last week.
