According to a new report from Politico, Senator Heidi Heitkamp (D-North Dakota) is the favorite to be named Agriculture secretary under President-Elect Donald Trump.
The first-term senator is a member of the Senate Agriculture Committee and has been a vocal advocate for farmers. She has recently broke ranks with her party, most notably on the labeling of genetically modified food, and environmental protection for wetlands and waterways.
Heitkamp had previously been rumored to be on the short list to be named Energy Secretary.
If she were to be named to any cabinet-level position, a special election would have to be held to fill her seat, wich would almost certainly turn over control of her seat to a Republican.
This would be a good appointment for Trump, as it would show that he is willing to reconcile with Democrats, while also gaining his party another senate seat, which they already hold the majority in. It would also set up the GOP for a major power grab during the 2018 elections, where 25 Democrats are up for re-election, with five of those races being considered competitive.
